Family attraction guide
Sesame Place San Diego
The Chula Vista water-park site once called Aquatica is now Sesame Place San Diego. Here is what changed and how to plan a family day.

01
Aquatica became Sesame Place
This Chula Vista attraction has changed names and themes more than once, so older photographs and local memories can be confusing. The property operated as Knott’s Soak City before SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment opened Aquatica San Diego in 2013. Aquatica combined large water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and family play areas. After Aquatica’s final season, the site was transformed and reopened in 2022 as Sesame Place San Diego. The current park uses Sesame Street characters and stories across a mix of water attractions, dry rides, play areas, shows, and character experiences.
That history matters when planning a visit. The old Aquatica photograph on this page documents the same Chula Vista property, but it does not show the park exactly as visitors encounter it today. Sesame Place is the current attraction and current name. Families should use the park’s official website for the operating calendar, tickets, ride availability, height rules, and special-event schedules. Seasonal operations and individual attraction closures can change, and a photograph from the Aquatica years should never be used as proof that a particular slide or feature is operating now.

02
What a family day feels like
The park is designed most clearly for families with younger children, especially visitors who recognize Sesame Street characters. A day can move between splash areas, larger water attractions, smaller mechanical rides, live entertainment, and character greetings. That variety is useful when one child wants water and another needs a quieter break. It also means adults should study the current attraction list before arrival rather than promising one specific ride. Height requirements, weather, maintenance, and seasonal schedules determine what each child can use.
Arrive near opening if your goal is to fit in several popular attractions. Start with the family’s highest-priority experience, then use shows or calmer areas as breaks. Water shoes, sun protection, refillable water bottles where permitted, and a dry change of clothes make the day easier. Decide in advance whether you need a locker, stroller, parking upgrade, or reserved seating; optional charges can significantly change the total cost. Review the park’s current policies on outside food, bags, flotation devices, and accessibility before packing.
03
Tickets, timing, and local context
Admission products vary by date and may include single-day tickets, seasonal passes, or bundled offers. Compare the complete price rather than the headline rate, including parking and any optional services your group actually needs. The park is in eastern Chula Vista near the Otay Ranch area, well inland from the bayfront and downtown. Driving is the most direct option for many visitors. Build in extra time on busy weekends and during school breaks, and check the forecast because heat, rain, or wind can affect comfort and operations.
For a less exhausting day, avoid stacking another major attraction immediately afterward. Nearby Otay Ranch offers restaurants and everyday shopping for a meal before heading home. Families visiting from outside the area can combine the park with a separate, slower day at the Living Coast Discovery Center or Chula Vista Bayfront. Most importantly, use the name Sesame Place San Diego when searching for current information. Aquatica remains part of local history, but old Aquatica listings, maps, coupons, and articles may be expired or inaccurate.
